Colchester Middle School is hosting a fabulous opportunity for boys in grades 6 through 8—an after-school fitness program!
The University of Vermontand Fletcher Allen Health Care are offering a grant-funded research fitness program at CMS for middle school boys not currently enrolled in CMS-sponsored athletics under the leadership of Alicia Jacobs, MD, and Dr. Connie Tompkins, PhD.
Dr. Jacobs is a UVM faculty member and the medical director of Colchester Family Practice. She is also the vice chair of clinical operations for the Department of Family Medicine and oversees all Fletcher Allen Family Medicine sites. Dr. Jacobs does quality research in chronic disease management and has a special interest in asthma and obesity.
Connie Tompkins, PhD, is also a UVM faculty member with expertise in the prevention and treatment of childhood and adolescent obesity. She is director of both the multidisciplinary, pediatric weight management program and REWARD TEENS at UVM; her current research interests include perception of physical activity in healthy weight and obese adolescents, incentives to increase physical activity in obese children and adolescents, and the association of inhibitory control and obesity in adolescents. Both are co-leading the investigation.
The three-series program—which is an opportunity for students to learn about wellness, set personal goals, and become more active—is staffed by licensed physical therapists from PT 360 Coop and is designed to meet the specific scope of the study. The sessions will collectively serve up to sixty students.
This program runs in six-week increments on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the CMS cafeteria from 2:15 to 4:00 p.m. The student registration meeting for the second session will be held on Monday, March 10, at 6:00 p.m. in the CMS Library-Media Center. This evening meeting is required of all parents who want to enroll their student(s), and the students should also attend the meeting. The second series of the program will run from March 11 through April 17.
Registration for the third and final session will occur on Monday, April 28, at 6:00 p.m. The third series of the program will run from April 29 through June 5.
