The FY 2015 budget includes funding to procure a Chromebook for each student in grades 7 and 8—approximately 290 students—to support academics in the core areas of science, social studies, and language arts.
What is a Chromebook, and how are they used to bolster educational opportunities?
A Chromebook is a type of personal computer with a design (and a price) that works particularly well in classroom settings. For the last couple of years, CSD students in grades 6–8 have explored a wide variety of Google applications, further facilitated by the purchase of a cart of Chromebooks earlier this year. Using the Chromebooks, the students can collaborate—in real time—on writing tasks with their classmates and even with virtual classmates from all around the world, conduct research for argumentative or informational essays, complete differentiated study in science, and complete skills assessments in mathematics. Additionally, the Common Core State Standards expects embedded technology practices in all curriculum areas, and the Chromebooks facilitate compliance with this expectation. These and other digital tools allow educators to guide the students in appropriate expectations as digital citizens—true real-world practice and preparation for college and career readiness. (Following the introduction of Chromebooks into CMS’s curriculum earlier this year, students used them to produce a video, which included rewriting song lyrics, singing, dancing, and recording. A number of the Colchester Middle School teachers have been actively involved with Google Apps for Education (GAFE), and many will also attend training in June as part of their ongoing professional development.
Part of the Colchester School District Vision and Strategic Plan 2012–2017, written collaboratively with community members, includes a pathway dedicated to technology infrastructure and integration as well as a pathway fostering high standards, expectations, and individual engagement for all learners.
