CHS Flutist to Represent Vermont in 2012 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade!

Many people spend Thanksgiving Day snug and warm in their homes or in the homes of friends or family, and more than fifty million people watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade live on television.

But one Colchester High School student will have the honored distinction of being the only student in Vermont to take part in the Macy’s Great American Marching Band in the 86th annual Macy’s parade this year, marching along the chilly parade route cheered by more than 2.5 million spectators in this internationally televised event.

Lauren Zwonik, currently a CHS junior, will represent not only Colchester High School but also all of Vermont in this highly select band honoring some of the very finest high school musicians from every state in the country. She will be one of only 185 musicians—and one of only a handful of flutists—honored for this distinction for which hundreds auditioned.

The audition requirements were exacting. In order to be considered, candidates were required to prepare and submit an audition recording with very stringent specifications, and players were judged upon technical proficiency, tone quality, and overall general musicianship. Lauren prepared “Nocturne et Allegro Scherzando” by Phillippe Gaubert and the third movement of Mozart’s “Concerto in D Major” for consideration by the committee.

Clearly, they were impressed. For a short video clip of Lauren performing the Mozart piece, click here.

Lauren, who also plays piccolo and who has been studying flute since the fifth grade, also recently won an upcoming solo performance opportunity with the Vermont Youth Orchestra. She plans to study flute performance and music education after graduating from CHS.

Lauren was also featured in our December 1 CSD Spotlight feature “Celebrating Our Student Musicians … And Why Music Education Is So Important.” We truly have exceptional talent in our community.

Join us in congratulating Lauren, and look for her on television on November 22!
