What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?

With the goal of connecting school and skill sets to students’ lives beyond graduation, Colchester Middle School hosted a really energetic and eclectic career fair on May 11. The event was designed to demonstrate the vast opportunities awaiting the students and the ways in which those various opportunities combine to make a community and an economy thrive.

A committee championed by CMS’s Kara Pawlusiak that included teachers, parents, and engaged community members organized the event. (Indeed, the Colchester School District Vision and Strategic Plan 2012–2017 specifically encourages community involvement in our schools.) Community representatives from an array of industries supported the effort, providing career-oriented, hands-on activities and real-world challenges in order to demonstrate what their jobs actually entail. Interest areas represented at the career fair included:

  • Animals
  • Arts
  • Audio-Video
  • Business and Innovation
  • Communications
  • Culinary
  • Fitness
  • Health and Wellness
  • Information Technology
  • Law and Public Safety
  • Marketing and Advertisement
  • Science and Engineering (with an ecology focus)
  • Science, Engineering, and Math
  • Sports and Recreation
  • Technology
  • Military

Industry professionals from Colchester Rescue, Healthy Living, the Burlington Free Press, WCAX, VSAC, UVM, Petra Cliffs, By the Dozen Dogsledding, Sabin Gratz Photography, Select Design, Brandthropology, Honest Yoga Center, Spotlight on Dance, The Edge, Burlington Technical Center, Colchester Police Department, Fletcher Allen Health Care, Appletree Bay Physical Therapy, IBM, Keyline Vermont, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, NRG Systems, Logic Supply, Schiring Radiographic Imaging, Champlain College, Green River Pictures, CTE, the United States Army, and many others.
