UMS to Host Red Clover Event on April 19!

On Thursday, April 19, Union Memorial School will host its triennial Red Clover day and evening event. Please join us!

Created in 1995 by the nonprofit literacy organization Windham County Reads, the Red Clover Award (named for Vermont’s state flower) seeks to encourage young children’s appreciation for writing and illustration. More than twenty thousand K–4 students enjoy the annual list of nominated books. During their library classes, the UMS students have heard all of the nominated books and have voted for their favorite, selecting Born Yesterday: The Diary of a Young Journalist, written by James Solheim and illustrated by Simon James.

During the afternoon of April 19, the students will participate in two forty-five-minute group activity sessions run by classroom teachers, special educators, guidance, and Specials teachers.

The evening portion of the Red Clover event will be held from 6:30–7:30 p.m. at UMS, and all community members are welcome to join us! Come explore children’s books and art activities based upon the Red Clover event, and learn more about our work with literacy. The students are always delighted and excited to share these books with their families.

The Vermont Center for the Book/Mother Goose Programs, the Vermont Department of Education, and the State of Vermont Department of Libraries cosponsor the Red Clover Award.
