A Harlem Globetrotter Spreads CHEER at PPS

Porters Point School students enjoyed a nice treat on March 30—a visit from Slick Willie Shaw, a member of the Harlem Globetrotters.

Community member and local radio station owner Paul Goldman arranged for the event for the PPS students. The Globetrotters’ Slick Willie Shaw presented a program for the students called CHEER for Character (CHEER is an acronym for Cooperation, Healthy mind and body, Effort, Enthusiasm, and Responsibility) as part of the Globetrotters’ 2012 World Tour. The CHEER for Character program was developed with the assistance of the US Department of Education. Numerous studies have illustrated that character development programs can help to reduce violence, drug use, and risky behaviors while also helping to enhance academic performance and attitudes.

While interacting with the students by demonstrating and teaching some tricks with a basketball, Slick Willie Shaw discussed the meanings of the words in CHEER’s acronym. The Globetrotter encouraged the students to work hard in school and to challenge themselves with good goals, high-fiving the students before departing.
