Life be not so short but that there is always time for courtesy.

In early December, we featured an article discussing our schools’ efforts around encouraging positive school climate. It is important to note that these are sustained and ever-evolving efforts, and fresh approaches are being developed in our schools all the time.
At Malletts Bay School on a weekly basis, adults nominate students they have observed exhibiting safe, respectful, and responsible behavior choices. Each week, names are drawn from among the nominees and heralded during morning announcements. The weekly Outstanding Ospreys—so called in honor of the school’s mascot, which was chosen in a student election last year—may choose from several prizes in recognition of their efforts. Just before the holidays, the Colchester Education Association donated $10 gift certificates to Barnes and Noble as a special “Outstanding Osprey” prize.
Here are some recent Outstanding Ospreys!
In addition, each class in the school sets and works toward a goal that focuses upon living and working together effectively. Students gather compliments from their teachers and other adults for safe, respectful, and responsible behavior, tracking their progress with marbles or some other visible, quantitative way. When the goal is achieved, the class wins a banner to display on their door. It is all about celebrating what is done well in our schools, capitalizing and building upon the positives.
The time is always right to do what is right.
