Superintendent Larry Waters feels that, in order to know where we are going, we must look back at where we have been.
Below is a link to a .pdf file providing a twelve-year budget and enrollment overview for Colchester School District, included the proposed school budget for Fiscal Year 2013.
A key point to note in this document is that, while free and reduced-price lunch eligibility and special education eligibility are steadily increasing, the proposed school budget remains virtually flat.
On a related note, you may recall our September 23, 2011, article reporting that the Vermont Department of Education (VT DOE) identified Colchester High School as one of the few schools in the state to have markedly and steadily improved student performance while still maintaining relatively low per-pupil costs compared to other high schools and districts in Chittenden County. (As a result, the VT DOE plans to study CHS’s approaches to providing quality education to our students.)
The school budget vote will be held on Tuesday, March 6, 2012. Meanwhile, the school board would like the community to offer input about the budget process during the December 6 and December 20 meetings, which will be held in the Colchester High School library at 7:00 p.m. It is a particularly important time for community members to share their ideas and concerns about education spending and funding with the school board.
