CMS Students Pay It Forward

We truly have remarkable students in Colchester.

From raising money for tsunami victims to raising money for juvenile diabetes and from running in the Special Olympics torch run to helping the flood victims in our community, the young people here really are astounding.

And now students at Colchester Middle School have organized, strategized, and put forth outstanding effort to pay it forward.

Members of CMS's Advocates for All

This group of students, many of whom were former participants in Vermont Kids Against Tobacco, decided to develop an alternative initiative to help their community, particularly since substance use prevention is already a part of their education. Desiring to advocate for community members of all ages, they organized a group that they named Advocates for All. After researching a number of local charities and organizations, Advocates for All determined that they would raise funds for the Lund Family Center, an organization that focuses upon strengthening families and reducing child abuse and neglect.

Patty Ward, a member of CMS’s guidance department, advised the students during their frequent meetings to discuss the various logistics involved with fundraising. The group presented its fundraising ideas to Principal Carolyn Dickinson for approval, which included making and selling St. Patrick’s Day shamrocks, co-hosting a dance, and offering babysitting for donations during CMS’s performances of “Into the Woods Junior.” The result of all of these efforts netted $450 to benefit the Lund Family Center.

Kitty Bartlett of the Lund Family Center said of Advocates for All’s efforts, “We are incredibly impressed by the members of Advocates for All—that
they wanted to make a difference and organized a group to do just that. And, through their passion, dedication, and collective efforts over the year, they raised an incredible sum of money. We are grateful that the group chose the Lund Family Center as the recipient of their fundraising and will put this contribution to hard work strengthening children and families across Vermont. We are thrilled to partner with Advocates for All and look forward to engaging the group as volunteers and ambassadors in future projects. Their actions show the positive impact that kindness and commitment can make in our community.”
