CSD Issues Apology for Commencement Guest Speaker’s Address

The Colchester School District issues a formal apology to the community for the content of the guest speaker’s address at the June 11 graduation ceremony.

George Schenk was invited to speak at Colchester High School’s commencement exercises in honor of his work in nutritious food initiatives, sustainability, and social responsibility. It was anticipated that his address at the graduation ceremony would include some aspects of these endeavors as would appropriately relate to graduating seniors. Although a draft of Mr. Schenk’s speech was reviewed prior to the event, the final content of his address was inappropriate for a dignified ceremony honoring academic achievement.

The district does not condone his remarks during his commencement address. To the contrary, the district finds the situation highly regrettable, and it apologizes to the community, particularly to the many who found the content to be offensive and inappropriate for the venue and occasion.
