Girls on the Run©, a nonprofit program sponsored by BlueCross BlueShield of Vermont, encourages girls in grades 3–8 to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running. Combining training for a 3.1-mile run or walk with age-appropriate discussions around such topics as tobacco and alcohol use, eating disorders, personal and Internet safety, and harassment, the program is designed to encourage positive emotional, social, and physical development. It also introduces the participants to alternative, fun ways of engaging in physical activity, such as snowshoeing, hiking, and yoga.

Kara Pawlusiak and Stephanie Miller coach Colchester Middle School’s Girls on Track program, along with assistant coaches Connie Gavin, Katie Keidel, and Meghan Tiernan Fischer. Several other CMS staff members offer their support, as well, to make this program so successful.

Malletts Bay School’s Girls on the Run teams are coached by Allison Dean, Michele Corriveau, Robyn St.Peter, Cheryl Aley, and Jen Turmel, as well as Debi Richardson, Wayne Tetrick, Ellen Tetrick, and Sandra Martin.

The 5K is a noncompetitive (untimed) event; coaches work with the girls to do their personal best—whether that means that they walk, jog, or run. Many parents and other family members also attend and participate along with the girls.
