Colchester Middle School hosted a breakfast party on May 5 to celebrate students’ reading efforts during the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Reading Award Program.
The Dorothy Canfield Fisher Children’s Book Award, named for American author Dorothy Canfield Fisher, celebrates children’s literature. A master list of thirty books is compiled annually and made available to students. Students who read at least five books from the list may vote on their favorite, and the winning author is invited to speak with students about writing children’s literature. (For more information, visit www.dcfaward.org/.)
This year, ninety-three CMS students voluntarily participated in the program, which is organized by the Vermont Department of Libraries each year (visit libraries.vermont.gov/ for more information about the VT Dept. of Libraries). The participating students at CMS were invited to a breakfast party in the library as a reward for their efforts. Eighty-two of the students attended!
The book that received the most votes at CMS was Killer Pizza by Greg Taylor (www.gregtaylorwriter.com/pizza.html). Statewide, the winner was CMS runner-up 11 Birthdays by Wendy Mass (www.wendymass.com/mass-birthdays.htm).
