The Lakeside Voice, Colchester High School’s student newspaper, was awarded—for the third time in the last five years—a meritorious achievement award in scholastic editing and publishing by the New England Scholastic Press Association (NESPA) at Boston University’s School of Communication on May 6. (For more information about NESPA, visit blogs.bu.edu/nespa, and for more information about BU’s School of Communication, visit www.bu.edu/com and www.bu.edu/academics/com/.)
Each competing school—producing the top high school newspapers and journalism programs from around New England—must present one year’s worth of student newspapers for review by a panel of judges representing NESPA. Competing schools are categorized into four divisions based upon school size; CHS, with 700–999 students, is a classified by NESPA as a Division II institution. The prestigious meritorious achievement awards, presented to the top-three schools in each of the four divisions across New England, are based upon the overall newspaper layout and the editing of the published pieces.
The Voice, now in its tenth year of continuous publication, is produced by CHS’s Journalism class, and all CHS students may contribute written content.
