Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin presented delegates from Malletts Bay School with a 2011 Fit and Healthy School Wellness Award in Montpelier on Wednesday, May 11.
Physical Education teacher Lilly Thomas traveled to Vermont’s capitol building to accept the award, accompanied by student ambassadors representing each grade. Third grader Louise Bacon, fourth grader Dasha Serdyuk, and fifth grader Grace Young were chosen to represent Malletts Bay School because of their outstanding leadership, citizenship, and participation.
“It was awesome!” said Grace. “Like a field trip but without all the waiting around!”
A total of thirty-nine schools from around the state received awards for their efforts in fostering healthy enterprises. The awards are a part of the statewide Fit and Healthy Kids initiative established by former Vermont Governor Jim Douglas in 2003. Malletts Bay School was recognized for a variety of wellness efforts, including cafeteria taste tests, a Walk to School day, staff fitness activities, and the development of a school garden.
