The Colchester School District has received recognition as a 2010–2011 BRONZE School Employee Wellness Program winner by the Directors of Health Promotion and Education, or DHPE. (For more information about DHPE, please visit www.dhpe.org).
Among other things, the DHPE recognizes schools that have implemented wellness programs that promote employee health and workforce productivity and that reduce the costs of employee absenteeism and health care. Out of the forty-three schools and/or districts from around the country that submitted applications for DHPE’s 2010–2011 School Employee Wellness Awards program, only nine schools are being recognized—and CSD is among them.
The district’s wellness program provides information about healthy living, physical activity, and healthy eating habits, along with access to a variety of physical activity and healthy living opportunities for its 445 school employees by partnering with Colchester’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), local fitness centers, a community nutritionist, a community chiropractor, and Vermont Educators Health Initiative’s PATH to wellness (for more information about VEHI and the PATH program, please visit http://vehi.org/cfm/path.cfm).
Some of the rewards CSD will receive as a BRONZE winner include a $250 grant for its wellness program, recognition on DHPE’s wellness website, and invitations to national conferences to make presentations about its wellness program.
